A Groundbreaking new study links glyphosate to more than 10 cancers, but now Congress wants to bail out Bayer and the pesticide industry with its new spending bill.
Last week a major new study came out from one of the world’s leading cancer research facilities that once again confirmed a strong link between Monsanto’s glyphosate and cancer at the same time House and Senate Republicans were working behind the scenes in DC to launch a massive subsidy increase to the 6 most pesticide intensive crops.
In the 2-year study, scientists found that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the weedkillers Roundup, caused a range of tumors in rats, including rare cancers like leukemia, at exposure levels considered safe by both the U.S. EPA and the European Union.
This is alarming news, but only confirms what past independent studies have found and because Bayer has been forced to pay out over $12 Billion in cancer lawsuit settlements, they’re now actively working to undermine our democracy.
Over the weekend we started hearing rumors about Big Ag, Bayer, and the pesticide industry working behind the scenes in Washington DC to sneak a pesticide liability shield into a must pass appropriations bill.
This comes at a time when millions of Americans are calling for a healthier and toxic-free food system and Congress is now poised to enact a Budget Reconciliation Package that will INCREASE subsidies for the chemical-intensive production of GMO commodity crops by $30 billion over the next 10 years.
If an additional $30 billion dollars subsidized school meals instead, they would have $7.56 per meal to purchase local, organic, and non-toxic food. This subsidy would also create the largest nationwide market for organic farmers, ensuring viability and long-term success, bolstering the local economies, and improve our children's health significantly within one year. |
In fact, last month the Republican-led House passed a version of the budget bill that will increase these subsidies for 6 six commodity crops by 64%, providing a total of $75 billion dollars over ten years. And the Senate just came back promising another $50 billion for crop insurance to prop up those same pesticide-reliant crops with no promises to reduce pesticides or synthetic inputs or help farmers transition to more MAHA-friendly regenerative practices.
This is basically a direct subsidy to the pesticide industry and further entrenches chemical-intensive agriculture. Instead, this money should be used to help farmers get off the pesticide treadmill and help America’s farmers transition to a healthier, more regenerative food system that can help tackle America’s chronic disease epidemic.
In short, this excessive spending on commodity crops is totally out of line with the mandate given to this Congress to Make America Healthy Again and the MAHA movement.
WHAT WE CAN DO
Leaders on the Senate Ag Committee are meeting RIGHT NOW to discuss the bill and make these decisions. That means we have a very short window of opportunity to stop the Senate from locking us into another decade of toxic, industrial food production! Call key Senate leaders ASAP and tell them that you think taxpayer money should go towards creating a healthy, regenerative food system – not towards these terrible subsidies! You can also email, but calling is slightly more effective.

WHAT TO SAY:
Express your opinion however you think is best. But if you’re having trouble figuring out what to say, here’s a sample script you can follow or use as a starting point:
Hi. My name is [Your Name], I live in [City/Town/State], and I’m [Share More Details About Yourself].
-
I’m calling about the Budget Reconciliation Bill.
I was very upset to see that this bill will increase spending by $30 billion dollars on subsidies for a total of $75 billion dollars for just 6 commodity crops.
This is a serious misuse of taxpayer funds.
- These 6 commodity crops are almost always grown with harmful pesticides that endanger human health, and these bloated subsidies won’t do anything to change that.
- Taxpayer money should instead go towards helping farmers grow food without so many toxic chemicals and creating a healthy and regenerative food system.
- Like millions of Americans, I care deeply about making America healthy again and feel that these subsidies are a step in the wrong direction. I urge you to address this in the Senate version of the budget bill. Thank you.
Thanks again for your support for MAHA and helping reform our food system to grow healthier food and help farmers transition to more organic and regenerative practices. Your voice matters and at this point, every call and email counts to creating a better food system!
