You may have seen Bayer’s recent disturbing attempt to manipulate public opinion: an ad campaign framing glyphosate as a vital “tool” for farmers. They go on to use fear tactics, claiming our food costs will skyrocket if we don’t have policies like a pesticide immunity shield that would protect them from lawsuits. This blatant corporate propaganda ignores the devastating truth: glyphosate is harming our food system, our health, and our economy. In fact, its use is directly contributing to higher food prices in several ways.
-
Drift level exposure of Glyphosate decreases nutrients in crops by 80-95%. The nutrients tested were ones that are essential for the immune system. Therefore, glyphosate contributes to livestock sickness and higher costs for veterinary drugs to raise livestock, and higher meat prices. Meat prices have risen over 6% just in the past 12 months, with the use of glyphosate on feed grains.
-
Glyphosate increases antibiotic resistance in animals, causing diseases that lead to hundreds of millions of dollars of livestock losses due to culling and higher meat prices. In 2023 $661 million was spent on poultry culling and farmer compensation, raising chicken and egg prices exponentially.
-
Glyphosate kills beneficial bacteria and decreases organic matter in the soil, increases weeds and pests, which leads to higher chemical inputs and higher costs of conventional foods. Farmer Rick Clark (as featured in Common Ground) farms 10,000 acres without glyphosate or toxic chemicals and saves 2.7 million a year. Lower soil quality means higher quantities of fertilizers and higher food prices.
-
Glyphosate decreases nutrient density in the crop ( AgAdvisory), leading to nutrient starvation in humans compelling consumers to purchase more food ( they still feel hungry), which means higher grocery costs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall food price index rose from a baseline in 1960 ( before glyphosate use) to being about 1,023% higher in 2025, meaning something costing $20 back then would cost around $224.67 today.
- Glyphosate increases sickness in humans, such as allergies, autoimmune disease, liver and kidney failure, infertility, mental health disorders, and cancer. These health issues compel consumers to purchase organic food instead, which increases their food costs by 30-50%.
There ARE non toxic weedkillers, non toxic harvest and farming methods, and there are farmers using them now, successfully. We do not need to allow foreign companies to manipulate our elected officials into protecting their profits, violating the constitution and tort law, and destroy the health of our soils and humans now and future generations.
Don't listen to Bayer's lies. Be the Beginning of the End of this Chemical Era. Say no to pesticide immunity shields and protect farmers and consumers from disease, death, and the high costs of glyphosate.
There are over 25,000 pesticide formulations available to farmers, with 510 chemicals approved for use, at least 85 of which have been banned in other countries such as China and EU. Any pesticide immunity would prevent Americans from gaining justice for harm from these 85 banned pesticides and 16,000 under FIFRA, as well as any new chemicals from China, Germany, or anywhere to come.
